Usher Stands by Diddy’s Legacy Despite Legal Fallout

Music industry figures in a recording studio setting

Veteran R&B star Usher has publicly defended his longtime mentor Sean “Diddy” Combs, describing the fallen hip‑hop mogul as a “legacy” figure even as he serves a multi‑year prison sentence over prostitution‑related convictions.

In a recent interview with Forbes’ Enterprise Zone, the 47‑year‑old singer took part in a word‑association exercise and unhesitatingly named “legacy” when asked to characterize Combs. Usher emphasized that his view may be controversial but insisted it reflects his personal experience rather than the sensationalized narrative surrounding Diddy’s legal troubles.

Usher, who has known Combs for decades and credits the producer with helping shape his early career, said he has “nothing negative to say” about the rapper. He argued that the public portrayal of Combs does not match the man he personally encountered, suggesting the mogul has been “misrepresented” in media coverage.

The comments come as Combs, 56, serves a 50‑month prison term after being convicted in July 2025 on two counts of transportation for prostitution. The eight‑week federal trial ended with acquittals on sex‑trafficking and racketeering charges but left the singer with a substantial sentence, a half‑million‑dollar fine, and years of supervised release.

Usher told the Forbes interviewer that he intentionally avoided many of the excesses that now cloud Combs’s public image, noting that he “knew better” than to get pulled into certain on‑tour influences. At the same time, he urged listeners not to erase the broader historical impact of Diddy’s work as a Black entrepreneur and cultural architect, saying the industry owes him recognition for turning culture into viable business for many artists.
