LONDON: In a harrowing revelation regarding the state of pediatric psychiatric care, new figures have disseminated that more than one million children were referred to mental health services in England during the 2024-25 fiscal year. This precipitous surge marks a 10 percent accretion from the previous year and nearly doubled the volume recorded just six years ago.

The latest dispatch indicates that approximately one in ten children was referred for support, reflecting a sustained escalation in demand across Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). Anxiety remained the most prevalent catalyst for referral, accounting for 16 percent of all cases.

The Neurodevelopmental Surge:

Referrals linked to suspected autism witnessed one of the most precipitous increases, surging by almost 50 percent in a single year to surpass 96,000. Other neurodevelopmental conditions, including ADHD and Tourette’s syndrome, also recorded substantial year-on-year growth, underscoring a profound shift in diagnostic awareness and clinical presentation.

In her statutory report, Children’s Commissioner Rachel de Souza articulated that the burgeoning demand continues to drastically outstrip the operational capacity of existing services. Consequently, a multitude of vulnerable youths are left languishing in extended queues for crucial assessments and therapeutic interventions.

The Extended Wait:

  • More than a third of those referred had not yet commenced receiving support.
  • Over 60,000 children had been waiting for more than two years—a salient increase from the previous year.
  • For neurodevelopmental conditions, fewer than one in five received treatment, with an average wait time of 12 months.

The advocacy group YoungMinds posited that these findings illuminate persistent disparities in access to care. The charity expressed apprehension that children from Black and racially minoritised communities, alongside those referred for suspected neurodevelopmental conditions, continue to face disproportionate delays in receiving the psychological support they desperately require.
