FBR Mandates Clear Display of Retail Price and Sales Tax on 56 Goods Under STGO 8 of 2026

ISLAMABAD: In a transformative move to crystallize tax compliance, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has proclaimed a stringent new policy mandating the ostensible display of retail prices and sales tax amounts on consumer goods.
According to Sales Tax General Order (STGO) 8 of 2026, issued on Monday, the paramount directive requires manufacturers and importers of 56 specific goods outlined in the Third Schedule of the Sales Tax Act to ensure that both the retail price and the exact sales tax levy are indelibly printed or embossed on every packet, container, or label.
The consolidation of Tax Visibility:
The taxable supplies and imports of these specified goods are chargeable to sales tax at a statutory rate of 18 percent of the retail price. The FBR has observed that in numerous instances, the retail price was either not printed, obscured by labyrinthine background designs, monograms, or color schemes, making it arduous for authorities to readily ascertain the price for tax levy and collection.
To eradicate this clandestine obfuscation, the FBR has directed that the retail price and tax amount must be displayed in a clear, legible, and prominent manner. The font size and color must distinctly contrast with the background, remaining readily visible and easily readable to the naked eye.
Furthermore, the policy explicitly proscribes the concealment of these figures by any design, monogram, sticker, wrapper, or any other material affixed on the goods or their packaging. Any contravention of these mandatory printing specifications shall entail draconian action under the relevant provisions of the Sales Tax Act 1990.
