Gum Disease Bacteria Linked to Heart Valve Disease in Groundbreaking 2026 Study

NEW YORK: A groundbreaking study presented at the American Heart Association’s Basic Cardiovascular Sciences Scientific Sessions 2026 has unveiled a compelling link between periodontitis and calcific aortic valve stenosis (CAVS), a cardiovascular condition that restricts blood flow from the heart.
Periodontitis is a severe periodontal disease that can damage the tissues and bone supporting the teeth. Past studies have shown that periodontitis can increase a person’s risk for several health conditions, including cardiovascular diseases. However, this new research identifies a specific pathogenic pathway involving Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis), one of the major bacteria responsible for periodontal disease.
The Pathogenic Pathway
“P. gingivalis can enter the bloodstream during routine activities such as brushing or chewing in people with poor oral health, and has been associated with several cardiovascular diseases,” explained Dr. Chenyang Li, a PhD candidate in the Department of Cardiology at Fuwai Hospital and co-first author of the study.
For this study, researchers utilized several methods, including human heart tissue and a mouse model, to search for a potential link between periodontitis and CAVS. At the study’s conclusion, researchers found that repeated exposure of live P. gingivalis in mice led to bacterial accumulation in the aortic valves and increased valve calcification and symptoms of aortic stenosis.
“Our findings suggest that repeated systemic exposure to P. gingivalis may actively contribute to the development of CAVS rather than simply being an incidental finding. We also observed that preventive antibiotic treatment reduced bacterial accumulation in the aortic valves and attenuated valve calcification,” Dr. Li stated.
The Role of Chronic Inflammation
Dr. Yu-Ming Ni, a board-certified cardiologist at MemorialCare Heart and Vascular Institute, noted that these findings are consistent with the broader understanding of oral health and cardiovascular disease. “Periodontal disease has long been associated with a higher risk of atherosclerosis, largely due to chronic inflammation. Over time, this inflammation can accelerate the deposition of fatty material in artery walls, increasing the risk of serious events like heart attack and stroke,” Dr. Ni explained.
What makes this study especially compelling is the potential link between gum disease and CAVS. Compared to conditions like heart attack and stroke, there is far less guidance on how to prevent valve disease, making this discovery a pivotal step forward.
Opening Avenues for New Treatments
Dr. Craig Basman, an interventional cardiologist at Hackensack University Medical Center, emphasized that this research opens several exciting avenues for future research. “The most exciting prospect is the potential for new treatments. I would be very interested in clinical trials investigating whether aggressive treatment of periodontal disease, perhaps even with targeted antibiotic therapy against P. gingivalis, can slow down or prevent the development of aortic stenosis in at-risk patients,” he noted.
While the research is still preliminary and based on animal models, it reinforces the undeniable connection between oral hygiene and systemic health, urging a paradigm shift in how preventative cardiology approaches dental care.
