NATO leaders are converging on Ankara, Türkiye, for a pivotal summit on July 7–8, 2026—just weeks away—as the alliance grapples with Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine and urgent calls to bolster European defense industrial capacity.

Announced by Secretary General Mark Rutte in August 2025 and confirmed through multiple preparatory visits this spring, the summit will prioritize three core pillars: accelerating defense spending to meet the 2% GDP target, scaling joint munitions production, and formalizing long-term security commitments to Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been invited to attend, signaling unwavering Western support.

Held at the Beştepe Presidential Complex, the gathering marks Türkiye’s first time hosting a full NATO summit since joining the alliance in 1952. Ankara is expected to leverage the platform to showcase its growing defense tech sector—including drone and radar systems from firms like ASELSAN—while navigating internal debates over Sweden’s accession and F-16 deliveries.

With tensions simmering in the Black Sea and Arctic, the Ankara summit could redefine NATO’s strategic posture for the remainder of the decade.
