TTAP Declares Nationwide Protest Movement from August 5 Over Political and Security Crisis
In a deteriorating political landscape, Pakistan's opposition alliance has proclaimed a comprehensive nationwide protest movement commencing August 5, marking a pivotal escalation in the country's ongoing political confrontation.
The Tehreek Tahaffuz-e-Ayin Pakistan (TTAP), a coalition of opposition parties, made the declaration at a joint press conference in Islamabad on Friday, following intensive consultative meetings among constituent parties.
Key Opposition Leaders Unite
The announcement was disclosed by Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Mahmood Khan Achakzai, Opposition Leader in Senate Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, TTAP Vice Chairman Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, Sardar Akhtar Mengal, and other alliance dignitaries.
The alliance cited a degenerating political and security situation across the country as the principal impetus for the protest movement.
Comprehensive Demands
The opposition alliance has stipulated several critical demands:
- Immediate resignation of the Balochistan government
- A joint session of parliament to deliberate terrorism and the situations in Balochistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir
- Postponement of the upcoming AJK elections pending dialogue among stakeholders
- Immediate release of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi, and other political detainees
The alliance also expressed consternation over the trial of Aleema Khan, sister of Imran Khan, which it characterized as political victimization of Khan's family.
Balochistan Takes Primacy
Achakzai, who also spearheads TTAP, emphasized that the alliance has prioritized the Balochistan issue following recent violence in the province, stating they would not disregard the situations in either Balochistan or AJK.
Referencing the recent attack near Ziarat, Achakzai alleged that police personnel had been deployed with inadequate ammunition and that no official had been held accountable following the incident.
Strategic Timing
According to TTAP spokesperson Akhunzada Hussain Syed, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan proposed during Thursday's consultative meeting that the opposition launch a nationwide protest campaign on August 5, commemorating three years since Imran Khan's conviction.
Khokhar articulated that the alliance had finalized its demands after extensive consultations, contending that immediate political engagement was needed to prevent further deterioration in Balochistan and AJK.
PTI Alignment
PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram affirmed to The Express Tribune that the party was "exactly on the same page" as the TTAP regarding the protest movement and its demands, demonstrating unified opposition coordination.
Upcoming Actions
Responding to inquiries about immediate actions before August 5, Hussain disclosed that Achakzai and other alliance leaders would visit Balochistan on Sunday to meet protesters and assess the situation on the ground.
The alliance would subsequently attempt to visit AJK after an earlier effort by its leaders to travel there was intercepted.
The schedule of protests would be announced after further consultations with constituent parties, with the alliance considering either multiple events across the country or one major gathering.
