UK Government and Jeff Bezos Back CuspAI’s $450 Million Series B to Revolutionize Materials Discovery

LONDON: Britain’s startup CuspAI announced on Monday that it has secured a monumental $450 million in Series B funding from a consortium of high-profile backers, including the UK government and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ investment fund.
The injection of capital, which values the company at $2.6 billion, is earmarked to accelerate the discovery of brand-new materials that could propel critical industries, most notably semiconductor manufacturing and clean energy.
The AI Materials Foundry Initiative
In a pivotal strategic move, CuspAI also unveiled the "AI Materials Foundry," a coalition comprising more than 45 global entities. Heavyweights such as chip designer Nvidia and social media conglomerate Meta have joined this initiative to pool the immense computing resources requisite for software that aids researchers in developing novel materials.
"If we don’t make progress fast, the next 50 years of industrial progress will be constrained by a single challenge: the world needs materials that don’t yet exist," articulated co-founders Chad Edwards and Max Welling in a recent publication.
Overcoming the Materials Bottleneck
This collaboration seeks to eradicate the materials bottleneck that currently constrains technological advancement. CuspAI’s proprietary AI platform, MIRA, empowers partners to execute comprehensive discovery cycles, spanning from generative materials design through simulation, synthesis route planning, and coordinated experimental validation.
The funding round was spearheaded by Kleiner Perkins and NEA. Joining the UK’s Sovereign AI Venture Fund and Bezos Expeditions as new backers are Glade Brook Capital Partners, Lux Capital, AMD Ventures, and the Netherlands’ Invest-NL. Furthermore, the startup has appointed semiconductor veteran Abhi Talwalkar to its advisory board, alongside modern AI pioneers Yann LeCun and Geoffrey Hinton, and hired former Apple and Google executive John Giannandrea to establish its U.S. foundry operations.
Jeff Bezos and UK government invest in British startup CuspAI. The AI materials science company aims to cut research time and the hunt for rare metals, positioning Cambridge as a central hub for Europe's AI innovation.
