KARACHI, Pakistan

Uplift AI, a pioneering Pakistani voice artificial intelligence startup, has successfully secured $3.5 million in seed funding, marking a significant milestone for the nation's burgeoning technology ecosystem. The investment round was spearheaded by Y Combinator, the prestigious accelerator behind global giants like Airbnb and Dropbox, alongside Indus Valley Capital, Pakistan’s premier early-stage venture fund.

According to an official statement, the syndicate also featured participation from Pioneer Fund, Conjunction, Moment Ventures, and prominent angel investors from Silicon Valley. Founded by Zaid Qureshi and Hammad Malik, former engineers at Apple and Amazon, Uplift AI is dedicated to developing advanced voice AI models tailored for regional languages such as Urdu, Punjabi, and Balochi. This paradigm shift ensures that individuals can interact with modern technology simply by speaking in their native dialects.

“Voice technology has the potential to uplift our entire GDP by giving everyone access to knowledge and opportunity. We founded Uplift AI to make this happen now, rather than in the distant future,” stated Hammad Malik, CEO of Uplift AI.

The startup’s flagship model, Orator, delivers human-like realism in Urdu, rapidly gaining traction among developers and small businesses. Currently, over 1,000 developers are leveraging their APIs to build innovative solutions, ranging from automated FIR registration bots to comprehensive health intake systems for rural clinics. This proliferation is particularly crucial in Pakistan, where approximately 42 percent of the adult population faces literacy challenges, historically acting as a formidable barrier to economic inclusion.

Aatif Awan, Partner at Indus Valley Capital, emphasized that voice serves as the primary gateway to the digital economy in emerging markets. “Built by former Apple and Amazon engineers, Uplift AI is delivering the foundational voice AI infrastructure to unlock this massive opportunity,” he noted. For industries serving mass markets—such as banking, healthcare, agriculture, and government—voice-first technology bridges the gap that text-based solutions cannot.

Zaid Qureshi, CTO of Uplift AI, highlighted that the company engineered its entire stack in-house, from data gathering and labelling to model training, as off-the-shelf solutions consistently compromise on regional linguistic nuances. “Our approach is paying off—it’s heartening to receive feedback from customers stating our model quality surpasses OpenAI and Google for these specific languages,” Qureshi affirmed.

With this fresh capital, Uplift AI intends to democratize voice-first technology across every language in Pakistan. Approximately $1 million will be allocated to data gathering and labelling initiatives, a move projected to generate thousands of local jobs. The remainder will fuel research and development to create state-of-the-art speech understanding and generation models for the country's five major languages, cementing Pakistan's position on the global AI map.
