US Embassy to Resume Regular Consular Services in Karachi and Lahore From July 20

ISLAMABAD: In a precipitated shift in diplomatic operations, the United States Embassy has officially disseminated the resumption of regular consular services at its missions in Lahore and Karachi, effective July 20, 2026.
This pivotal reopening arrives merely months after the US curtailed its diplomatic footprint in the provincial capitals, a move precipitated by sweeping security risks following violent anti-American protests. The unrest had erupted in the wake of US-Israeli military strikes on Iran in February, which tragically resulted in the demise of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The March Cessation:
During the tumultuous protests in March, demonstrators managed to breach the outer perimeter of the US consulate in Karachi. In response to the impending danger, US Marine Security Guards opened fire, resulting in the fatalities of at least 10 protesters, according to local officials. Consequently, the US Mission was compelled to suspend routine consular operations and directed non-emergency staff to depart the country.
In a memorandum posted on X today, the US Embassy in Islamabad articulated that the consulates will recommence operations for US citizen services in both cities, alongside non-immigrant visa processing specifically in Karachi. The embassy also exhorted applicants to eschew paying external sources for visa interview appointments, warning against fraudulent intermediaries.
Official Admonition:
In an accompanying video message, an embassy official cautioned citizens against utilizing unauthorized agents for visa applications, emphasizing that all processes must be conducted exclusively through the embassy’s official digital portals to ensure stringent security compliance.
Official Embassy Communiqué:
The US Embassy in Islamabad officially announced the reopening on their verified X account:
Great news, Pakistan! The U.S. Consulates in Lahore and Karachi are reopening for regular consular services. Lahore for U.S. Citizen Services and Karachi for U.S. Citizen Services + Non-Immigrant Visa Processing. https://x.com/usembislamabad
